Random blue screening?

Recommended Posts

So EL is blue screening me randomly, it could be after 6 hours of playing, it could be after 15 mins, no factors seem to be contributing particularly.

I tried updating video drivers, but it didn't seem to have an effect. ( I did normal install, not the long way through safe mode, but I really hate having to do that.)

Vista is telling me that "NVIDIA Graphics Driver has stopped working properly."

Computer Specs:

-Vista Home Premium (32 bit)

-Intel Core2 Quad Q9000

-4 gigs o' Ram

-GeForce GTX 260M

Here is the error log, but I am pretty sure its unrelated:

Have you tried FPS limiting and reducing some things like shadows & reflections to see if EL is stressing your system out too much?

I don't get locked up or fps drop before I blue screen, its just instant. But I will test out some changes in video settings.

just for being sure...you aren't talking about "the blue screen" of Windows, right?

windows-7-bsod.jpg

Yep standard BSOD.

edit: Did the proper video driver install today. Uninstall from device manager, than clean driver related files in safe mode, and than install new video driver. Was playing smooth for about 2 hours when once again, out of nowhere was struck with blue screen of death.

Also had tried turning off shadows and the other extras and I still ended up BSoDing.

Bump for ideas and update.

Aside from BSoD it occasionally just makes my whole screen black, which I can't fix without manual restart, but I know at least some processes are running since music will continue to play fine.

I tried some other stuff and I think its also safe to say its not on my end due to fragmented files/ spyware / malware / virus.

So I am thinking that my current driver isn't compatible with EL or there is some EL setting somehow conflicting.

Still having the issue. Only EL causes this problem, other games (way more cpu/gpu intensive) don't cause this problem.

Should I upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista? Or is there even less support for EL on 7 than vista?

The issue is usually buggy OpenGL drivers. Most Windows games use DirectX so mfg's pay more attention to that and often let buggy OpenGL versions get shipped.

You could try this...

Go to

C:\WINDOWS\System32 and rename the Win32k.sys file to Win32k.old and then

close the window. Now go back to the system32

folder and you will have a

new and non-corrupt Win32k.sys file.

I have had someone I know with the same issue and it was fixed by doing the above quoted.
