reoccuring system crash ubuntu 9.10 karmic 64bit

Recommended Posts

System:

Toshiba Satellite L305D,

AMD Athlon X2 Dual core QL62 2.0 ghz,

3gb ram,

Ati Athlon Radeon 3100,

Ubuntu 9.10 karmic 64 bit

Proprietary AMD drivers installed via "system"-->"Administration"--->"hardware drivers", restricted repositories enabled within synaptic.

EL set to poor man, all eye candy disabled, NOT using animation program. Problem still exists.

Problem:

after 5 to 10 minutes the entire system freezes. can't force quit, can't restart, nothing, power button has to be held down for manual shut down. (only happens with EL program). Some times I can see the animation getting choppy and head it off by restarting the pc.

I have tried uninstalling ALL ubuntu approved drivers and reinstalling AMD proprietary drivers ONLY, using Synaptic, but then nothing works properly. I end up reformatting and reloading when I try this.

I don't see any errors to provide some clues. Solutions greatly appreciated. We have 3 systems with identical configurations and all 3 have the same problem.

Could this be related to the ati driver memory leak discussed in this thread?

This sounds exactly like the symptoms I was having with my laptop, and it ended up being an overheating issue with ubuntu not recognizing fan speed/freq/etc correctly.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=539365

following the instructions in that link solved it for me, might be something different for you, but easy to test anyways :pickaxe:

Edit the text file /etc/modules and add in the following lines:

battery

ac

thermal

processor

acpi-cpufreq

cpufreq-userspace

I read both threads. The one on the memory leak and the one on over heating. The system has been running hot so I felt that was relavent, whether or not it's related. Since the behavior yells memory leak I thought that to be important also. I downloaded updated drivers from amd, but It was difficult finding the drivers since searching under notebooks yielded nothing, This is the link I found and used.

Then I checked the modules file. It had only 2 entries dealing with the rtc so I copied and pasted the module names and we are currently testing one system if it works on this system we'll modify the other two but currently it seems to be working.

Previously the fastest way for me to get it to crash was to bring up el and a web browser at the same time, navigating to a page with dynamic scripts (ex: translate.google.com) I worked with it for about 40 minutes last night without it crashing or over heating and I'm trying it out again today. So far so good.
