Cash for clunkers safe?

Recommended Posts

I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU TO NOT GO TO CARS.GOV

You ask why?

OK here is why...

When you go to that site for the recent "Cash for clunkers" project you are prompted with the following agreement...

"CASH FOR CLUNKERS"

"This application provides access to the DoT CARS system. When logged on to the CARS system, your computer is considered a Federal computer system and is the property of the U.S. Government. Any or all users of this system and all files on this system may be intercepted, monitored, recorded, copied, audited, inspected and disclosed to authorized CARS, DoT, and law enforcement personnel, as well as authorized officials or other agencies, both domestic and foreign."

This is a horrible thing for anyone looking to protect their rights to privacy..

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Also I think this agreement is specifically for car dealers turning in the old cars but I would be highly suspicious of such an agreement.

so now they can "monitore, recorde, copy, audit, inspect and disclose" ur tons of porn ? :)

1. It's not about the porn (I can view for free on websites with no download required)

2. It's more about personal data like writings, saved passwords, personal data, etc saved on the PC for myself and no others that I don't want to have access to it.

Again like I said though this is more pinned toward people who deal with cars and not your everyday "Joe" but I still don't trust even visiting a website that promotes this kind of infringement upon peoples rights to privacy.

They can do that already. This is just a fail-safe license that all programs do. This one just happens to be in plain English.

The issue isn't privacy. The issue is how stupid the program is and how much of a waste it is. It doesn't promote long term economical growth at all and is a waste of tax dollars. What happens when people can't afford the new payments on these cars?

Most of the cars being turned in aren't clunkers at all. As an 18 year old with no vehicle, I'd *gladly* take one of these cars. Instead, they destroy the engine of these cars being turned in and flatten them for not being "fuel efficient." It's complete BS, as most of these vehicles *are* actually fuel efficient. You can see a profile of each car on the website. This is just another way to promote cars the majority of people don't want.

Want to see the process of how they get rid of these vehicles?

That video will also link you to other videos of this being done.

Another terrible plan by the Obama Administration.

After watching the video posted by sora...

1.) Anyone else think that looks about as "environmentally safe" as burning tires? It looks to me to be a very wasteful process, producing more pollutants all at once than are saved by not letting that car "live" out it's life on the road?

2.) Not necessarily connected to the video, but still to the program... Is it really economically viable in this rough time to force everyone into buying new cars because older ones just won't be available?

3.) Is the environmental impact really worth the effort and red-tape and loads of taxpayer money?

My thoughts, NO.

Nice try, Obama, but not sound judgment at this time.

The worst thing is what they do with the perfectly fine car that you hand in.

Just watched a video of an 06 turbo volvo having the oil replaced with sodium silicate, and the engine run until it's destroyed.

Destroying a new engine like that does FAR more damage to the enviroment and your economy than what the scheme is trying to fix. A $10,000 engine, completely destroyed for no reason.

Edit: whoops. Didn't realise sora had posted the video I was talking about.

I'm confused. How do you make a connection between being logged on the CARS system and them somehow having access to your PC? Their references above "this system" refer to the CARS system, not your personal PC.

"CASH FOR CLUNKERS"

"This application provides access to the DoT CARS system. When logged on to the CARS system, your computer is considered a Federal computer system and is the property of the U.S. Government. It seems more logical to me that "Any or all users of this system and all files on this system" is a direct reference to "the DoT CARS system" and not your personal computer, but it is somewhat unclear. I wasn't able to find this snippet on the site either. I would be interested in a link to its location if you can provide one. The whole program apparently ends in 2 days anyway, on August 24.

I did find their privacy policy by following a small link at the bottom of the page - it seems pretty boilerplate to me.

1. It's not about the porn (I can view for free on websites with no download required)

This is off topic, but just a note for your knowledge - everything you view in your browser is downloaded to your computer. You access a web site via your browser and a text document is downloaded to your machine and subsequently rendered by your browser. Where the browser finds references to images in the document, they are also retrieved and rendered by the browser. All of this is stored in your browser's cache which you may clear at your convenience.
