Help Needed ASAP. Connection problems.

Recommended Posts

I have been trying for hours to connect to El. I have been thru the forums. I have redownloaded el like atleast 6 times. And Nothing is working. I got me a Lap top finally and the first thing I go to download is EL. Think im gonna cry. I have turned off the firewall and such. But for whatever reason I cant connect. I only get as far as the rules page. I cant even find the umm ports. So i cant check them. and I have been all up and down my el files.

Seems to me that your EL client is working perfectly, so there is no need (and no point) in reinstalling it or moving folders around.

Rather, it seem that your port 2000 is blocked, probably by some antivirus software / local firewall / firewall on your router / firewall at your provider.

Try opening a command shell and typing the command

telnet game.eternal-lands.com 2000

If nothing happens, then your port 2000 is most probably blocked (and notice that the EL client is not playing any role). If you see the EL welcome message, then port 2000 is open, but the cause is something else. I would be very surprised though if you could see the welcome message. In the former case (no message), then you can only review the software installed on your machine (firewalls and virus chekers), check the OS settings, your router settings, or possibly ask your network admin or ISP tech support to make sure nothing outside of your machine is playing any trick.

If you see no message, and are positive that nothing on your machine is blocking port 2000, try the commands

traceroute game.eternal-lands.com

or

tracert game.eternal-lands.com

(depending on your OS) and post the output here: it might give an indication of what is wrong.

Did you change ISP or internet connection type recently? Is this laptop connecting via the same internet connection you've always used?

Your traceroute worked fine, but telnet failed.

Pretty well guarantees that the problem is outgoing TCP connections on port 2000 are blocked.

If you're sure you've tried connecting with all local firewalls disabled, then the next step is to call your internet service provider and ask them if they're blocking outgoing TCP connections on port 2000, and if so, ask them to stop blocking.

If your ISP is the type that believes their clients are too stupid to be in charge of the ports they can connect out on, and you are unwilling to change ISP, Learner's proxy service is your best option:

I couldnt even find any port 2000 or port anything in any of my el files. i turned off firewalls and gave access for 2000 in exceptions etc. and i was on about 3 different wifi connections in different areas of the city. I was trying to find port 2000 in my el.ini files to make sure it was set correctly and couldnt find anything about any ports and i searched all the el files i could. I really do want to play tho. i have been waiting for this for over a year almost 2. Im gonna try again later. Im in class right now. think they frown on me playin games in class or downloading games either lol. Which i shall do again. and i am in a different location so im hopin it might work today.

If you have the same problem at all three spots, and those are from different providers, almost certainly you have some software on your machine blocking outgoing connections. Again, this has nothing to do with your EL client, so it is of no avail searching among your EL files.

If all three hotspots were from the same provider, maybe your ISP is only offering mobile web connectivity (e.g., only HTTP, that is port 80), and not unrestricted TCP/IP access. To test this last possibility, try issueing the command

telnet time.nist.gov 13

if you get the current time of day as an answer, then you have full access (and we have to look for some other cause for your problem). If you get no answer, or the command is stuck, then most probably you only have web access, and in that case we have found the problem: you have to talk to your ISP to see how you can be allowed full access.

I am running Vista and having problems, so I tried this, but 'telnet ....... ' is not recognized as a valid command, and I am at a public place, is it safe to say whoever is administrating the routers and stuff here (or the ISP) is blocking it?

If you are using a public connection ie internet cafe, then yes, it is reasonable that the company owning the equipment is blocking it
