Political faction system

Recommended Posts

Well, last night we had some fun chat on Chn 6, and it all started as a joke, but I think it would be cool to actually implement something like this.

So here is how I am thinking to make it work:

There will be 3 political factions (possibly more): communists, socialists and anarchists.

A player can join (or not) a faction, but changing the faction or giving up that faction will be very expensive, something like 500Kgc.

Each factions will have some advantges and dissadvantages, as well as the ability to make a few unique items.

The whole thing is at an idea stage, not sure if/when it will be implemented, and I want to make sure that some players will use it. It took me a while to implement the total war idea, and no one uses it.

So, here is a quick (and totally incomplete) set of ideas:

Communists will be able to share the damage, if they have 1 or more other commnists from the same guild nearby. Possibly share the mana too. Their remote heal spell will have twice the power. They will have the Hammer of Stalin, a weapon which can be used to attack anarchists on non PK maps).

The socialists will be able to share a bag (from 1 tile away) so they can use it for group projects in a relatively safe way. They will also gain 50% more food fom anything they eat, including the bones. They will have the sword of Obama, a weapon which can be used to attack anarchists on non PK maps, and if they die by it, the items they carry/wear will be RANDOMLY distributed among the logged in players, regardless of the map, and regardless if the anarchist carries a rosto or not.

The anarchists mines and caltrops will have twice the damage of normal mines. They will also be able to make (if they are good engineers) a special RC bomb (RC Nail Bomb) that must be deployed around a target, and then they and their bomb must NOT be detected for 10 seconds by anyone. If they or their bomb is detected, it will dissapear. However, if the anarchist is not detected, he or she will be able to detonate that bomb and damage communists and socialists in non PK maps.

Then if this system is implemented, we can have some quests for each faction to increase your faction level, which can give all kind of advantages (and some penalties).

So, what do you think? Do we have people interested, who think they will join one of the factions? I don't mean "I'll wait until all the details are set in stone", what I mean is: "Hmm, I think it's interesting and I guess I'll do it once it's implemented".

Communists, socialists, and anarchists?

That's it?

Booooo!

Bad idea, or would need muuuuch fleshing-out and a LOT more completion of the political spectrum to be the least bit worth doing, in my opinion.

i think people being pkable on non-pk maps will put people off, whatever the conditions under which it is brought in. if the benefits were as fighting based and extreme as the ones above i dont think i would join one of these factions.

this is a bit of a fail, these are just names for features in the game and have no relation to any real life political inclinations.

Could we at least have something MORE FANTASY RELATED? I am sick of politics and EL helps me to avoid it, no need to have this titles and names here, do we? The idea in general is quite nice, but please no Stalin, Obama, KGB and so on...

I don't really like any of these ideas, as proposed. I personally fail to see what it has to do with a medieval style game. If such items as the obama sword are added. It's nice to have EL so separated from RL woes, and I'd rather not bring political nonsense any further than the already questionable channel 6 banter. Some other ideas could work in theory, (like total war), but never in practice (like total war). I'd like to see a poll of people who would pledge to use such a system, and for those people to be bound to their decision. This would ensure anyone voting for a given idea doesn't simply waste developer time by coding another underutilized feature.

It's a very interesting thing.

Bad thing is, beign PK'able on Non-PK maps would be kind of bad.

It would be like the guild wars system, that just died after a small usage.

I have not seen many use the total war stuff, but I have seem some friendly style total war between pk guilds. They were shooting and fighting each other near storages. If you wish to increase the chances of this, perhaps you should ask for the ants to enlist for total war and accept enemies. That would probably get a few guilds at war with ants.....event some that are not pk guilds.

This sounds like a strange set of notions. I think it is interesting that it includes quests though. I would honestly prefer it did not have to do with politics though. Enemies and allies with certain EL races with quests would perhaps be better. Elves, dwarves, orcs, humans, draegoni....they could each have quests to tilt the balance and give you a chance at interesting items.

I think this is a really good idea, but I think the political system should be more controlled by players, if you combined the new political system with the guild system you could give guilds more power and make them more useful.

In order to do this I would give guilds levels based on total experience earned by all active members while they are in the guild. Each guild level would give the guild a pickpoint that the guild master could spend on a nexus or stat bonus for all guild members OR they could buy a guild perk Like socialist, communist, capitalist or perks that allow the creation of special items like the Obama sword or even negative perks, like a perk that makes rostos not work but gives -8 pick points. These perk should be insanely expensive and not commingle to deter people from abusing the system. To prevent people from swapping guilds in order to gain bonuses you could change the penalty for leaving a guild from 2 days to a week or two. Alternatively you should make an anarchist perk which prevent characters from joining a guild but gives a slight stat bonus and allows the creation of a super eng weapon.

I think by rolling the political system with the guild system it would streamline the game better and give more power to guilds and GMs

Same here...

The idea have (from my point of view) two flaws:

1.- It's too expensive to get away from the faction (500k). I would never get inside of something that will cost too much to get away from... It's like taking a positive perk and then use a removal to get PPs back. But even if 500k is too much money for me, it might not be for other players, who knows...

2.- The possibility of being killed in non-PK maps, and what is worst... loose stuff even carrying a rosto... Something I like from EL is that I'm the one that goes and looks for danger, danger does not looks for me :o

I personally would not join any faction that way, it just don't fit with my quiet, AFKness style of playing... but that's just me, may be it's a good idea for other players. :)

Edit:

@ Talixim (Below of this post, the ability to propose duels)

@ Shaper (The guild based stuff sounds really, but really cool!!!)

@ Nathan (I would be first in the line to ask an ant for a fight)

Really cool ideas guys!

I don't like the fact that people would want political stuff brought into a fantasy world...just doesn't mesh together very well imo.

The ability to propose duels to another player would be much more realistic, in the EL world.

 Why not implement something like god factions or race factions that are ingame already? Just a thought. A good number of folks seem to be against the politics idea. :o Let's wait for Korrode's response. Edited by popeye

Yeah, because in medieval times they didn't have political systems, yes?
