Disturbed PMs me asking if i want to buy char

anyways since i knew Disturbed b4 and he was an old friend i thought this was legit, now i found out it wasnt

so i offer him ti pl8 CoM and Cutty + 10kgc for the char 166k total since the char had items

he got me to trade the items to his alt Robin_Hood

i was an idiot, anyways i know scamming is not against the rules and char buying is at ur own risk

im just letting every1 know that he is a scammer and for every1 to watch out for him

im always wonder, if the char itself is scammed during selling/buying char, can the buyer ask for the new password as in like he has forgoten it? of course, with the payment. and also provided that the buyer can show the proof.

 

Because it seems that, to me, buying/selling char is more towars RL business rather than EL business, so its pretty much like cheating and scamming in RL in which the scammer can be punished, fine, jail etc etc. Especially when the buyer pay with real money.

I am very sorry that you got scammed but be very careful because this is against the game rules. You cannot use a "middle man" to give stuff to someone alt.

 

Both of you could face ban if caught.

If people only exchange game items for characters, then nothing "of value" is exchanged/lost, so it's all within the game rules and just a case of caveat emptor ("let the buyer beware").

 

If people pay RL money for a character and get scammed, then that's a real scam where something of value (real money) was stolen by fraud. But the game's rules and legal disclaimers mean the game is not at fault if someone uses it to defraud you of real money, so the buyer would have to settle it between themselves and the scammer. But tracking someone down on the internet is so hard that it's really not worth the trouble. At least, I hope no one is paying so much money for an EL character that it would be worth the trouble and expense to track down the scammer, because, you know, that would be crazy.

 

But in other games -- like Second Life, for a famous example -- so much RL money changes hands among players that there have been RL lawsuits between players over scamming.

 

I hate that shit. It just kills any idea of fun in a game.

 

EDIT: So I guess if someone wants to buy a character, they should follow the RL rule for buying expensive stuff -- payment comes on delivery. That means, they don't get their gc/items/RL money UNTIL AFTER you get the password and confirm that it works and you can control the character.

 

EDIT EDIT: Basically, it should go like this if trading game items for a character: Buyer puts gc/items in trade window. Seller gives the password. In new window, Buyer logs onto bought character. If it works, Buyer completes the trade and then immediately changes bought character's password. If the Buyer can't log onto the character with the given password, he aborts the trade. If the Buyer tries to scam the seller by aborting the trade after getting the right password, the Seller then reports a stolen pass and changes the pass for his character so the Buyer can't use it.

You are all quite right, mods have no say in this as scamming is not against the rules and if I had a rl dollar for every time this occurred, I could buy a brand new full sized truck 4x4 without using payments.

 

However, one thing to note for the future: Anytime someone says he will sell you a character and states that you just give the money to his alt--then DO NOT go thru with it. Either way it goes, its bad news for you. If the situation is a scam, you will lose your stuff and not get the account. If its not a scam, then you are taking part in breaking rule 5 yourself as being a middleman. No character can benefit from another character of his own--therefore you cannot sell one character you made and get an alt to reap in the rewards of selling it. So regardless, either way YOU lose--as you will be locked for illegal multiplay as a middleman.

 

Just a warning, as yes if robin_Hood gives the stuff to Disturbed (by any means) it would be multiplay, it is also multiplay if you aid in being a middleman if its not a scam.

 

Tread lightly and mark this down as a lesson learned.

Stricken, perhaps you would like to read rule 5 again. Robin_Hood cannot benefit from selling of Disturbed as he would not be able to benefit from same items without selling Disturbed. Using an alt to get ingame goods that would not be available to him for free (i.e. not selling the alt) is considered multiplay. What or if Robin_hood trades this stuff further to his other character Disturbed is not part of this debate, as frankly its not the issue. But your aiding in someone multiplaying by being a "middleman" if this was not a scam is what I am trying to educate you all on. Rule #5 is a very complex rule, thus why it is not limited to those examples.

OK, then skip the reporting it to mods part and go straight to outlaws. The important part is that there should be no time space between Person A handing over the character and Person B handing over the payment, with both keeping the option to abort if it goes wrong. Friendship is friendship, and business is business, and they should never get mixed up.

 

Like I said, this is how it's done in RL with RL stuff and RL money. To me, it doesn't matter much if it's just game items, but if you want to make sure you don't get scammed, then this is one way to do it.
