Is the computer for standalone server use?

Will you be using it as a desktop PC?

What spec is the system?

This asks about 20 questions and points you in the direction of the most suitable distro for your individual circumstances.

At the risk of starting a distro war, I have to say the universal set used in that test is quite limited. Considering your requirements, it would have to be Slackware (which comes with all those apps you are looking for), Debian or Fedora (which is now at version 8) - if I had to choose from that list.

I would also recommend Zenwalk, which is what I run on my desktop and laptop, and would also choose on any servers.

Edit: Grammar and stuff

Debian Etch of course =p

I agree with this wholeheartedly. Debian is stable as *hell*, and it's very easy to install/upgrade/patch additional applications using apt-get. I have a busy production server from the previous version of Debian that has a 400+ day uptime right now.
