I've helped about 100 or so people so far. The most problems I've found are these:

1) Not putting sounds in the right directory (needs to be in sound folder, not sound/sound) if you unzip into sound folder, it makes another folder named sound in that folder :)

2) On some windows machines, not installing in "program files\eternal lands" so data dir in "documents\eternal lands\main\el.ini" must match where you installed (changing the ini in program files\eternal lands does nothing after you've launched the game once as it copies the ini from install directory after first launch, so if you change before launch in install directory, should be ok).

3) People are copying old maps directory to new, this is causing many new "things" to not appear on maps as they should (not a good idea)

4) Some people are experiencing mouse bug problem that weren't before (can't move when they click), fixed in options->video, mouse bug option.

These things seem to cover most people. I'm on a windows vista machine. Nvidia 8500GT.

Don't shoot me. :):pirate::medieval::confused:

If you go below ground level on maps. You've probably done what I did yesterday.

You get home tired.. wanna get going quickly. Install the whole thing, blabla.

You notice your maps like cave maps, maps for guild maps, etc etc are gone.

You copeid your old 1.4 maps folder into your new EL map. And bam, you got problems.

I wanted to solve it by getting the 1.5 maps folder to overwrite that again, tried it with Cyprom's maps folder, but didn't work. :/

I reinstalled EL and didn't overwrite the whole maps folder this time, if you overwrite the new .elm files, it messes up your maps. You should only bring in .bmp ones.

And yes, it's not so specifically for this update, but I was stupid enough to do this myself, so I figured maybe I'd put it here for people who are as lazy as me when they get home after school/work/whatever.

Solution:

I opened my el.ini found in "C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\Eternal Lands\main"

and scrolled down to

This option allows you to specify a directory other than the current directory to load data from.

This needs to be set to where you installed EL.

For Windows users, the default is "c:\Program Files\Eternal Lands\".

For Gentoo users, the ebuild installs in /usr/share/games/eternal-lands.

#data_dir = "c:\Program\Eternal Lands"

See to it that the #data_dir is set to the correct path where you installed EL

Apparently it had altered the data_dir on it's own somehow

When going into the options to change screen size and toggle special effects etc., I had a problem with changing the chat text size (under the "Font" tab). Changing the name size and the notepad size was fine, but when I tried to change the chat text size by placing my cursor over it and using backspace on my keyboard, EL crashed twice.

Solution:

I changed the other two text sizes, then closed the option window and did #save. Then I opened the options window again and used the arrows instead of backspace to change the numbers. Seems like a very obvious thing, but since backspacing worked on the other two font sizes I was surprised it didn't work on the chat size. Anyway, using the provided arrows worked and the program has not crashed since.

To get EL to work on our Ubuntu 7.10 - the Gutsy Gibbon laptop (Dell Inspiron E1505)

System Specs:

256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300 TurboCache, for Inspiron E1505N

Integrated High Definition Audio, Inspiron

First you want to delete everything related to the old client:

1. Delete the current game directory (the ENTIRE EL folder)

2. Delete the *.elc directory (go to your home folder, and if you can't see it press ctrl-h and look again).

Next, download:

http://www.eternal-lands.us/downloads/elc_150_linux.zip (Linux 32/64 bit)

It should download directly to your desktop. Double-click to open the folder, and highlight the folder inside (el_150), and click Extract. You want to extract it directly to your Home Folder.

Go into your home folder and rename el_150 to el. Leave the window open in the EL folder. Go to the terminal (Applications/Accessories/Terminal) Type cd .. and hit enter. Then type cd ______ where _____ is your login name for Ubuntu and hit enter. Type cd el and hit enter.

type chmod 775 install.sh and hit enter

Go back to the other window where you have the EL folder and double-click on install.sh to run it. It asks if you want to run it in terminal or run, you just want to run it.

Go back to the terminal and type chmod 775 el.x86.linux.bin and hit enter. You can close the terminal after that.

Go back to the other window where you still have the EL folder and double-click on el.ini. It should go DIRECTLY to the line labeled #data_dir = "c:\program files\games\el" (or something similar). You need to delete the quotes and everything in them and change that line to #data_dir = /home/_____/el where ____ is your login name for Ubuntu.

Save the el.ini without making ANY other changes. Double-click on the el.x86.linux.bin to start EL, and play for a bit to make sure that there haven't been any problems installing so far. Make sure all sound options are turned off, since they haven't been installed yet.

Fight some stuff, go to storage, mix some stuff, go in and out of a few buildings, etc. If you have any problems or crashes, delete it all and start the process over again. Make sure you follow the directions word for word. Make sure you don't have the old .elm files. Once you get this far without bugs, see below for getting the sound and the music.

Sound download:

http://www.eternal-lands.us/downloads/el_sound_150.zip (optional sounds)

Once downloaded, it should go to your desktop. Double click it to open, and unzip the sound directory into the el folder (see the directions for the previous unzip above). Look in your EL folder to make sure the sound folder is in it. Run EL and turn the sounds on to make sure that they work. Test as before.

Music download:

http://www.eternalmusik.org/music/music_full.zip

Once downloaded it should go to your desktop. For Music, there is an extra step to create a folder in the el directory. Go into the EL directory, right-click and create a new directory. Name the directory music. Unzip the download into this directory (see the directions for the previous unzip above). Test as with sounds.

Creating a Desktop Shortcut:

Go to the EL Folder. Right-click on el.x86.linux.bin and choose Make Link. Look in the folder for Link to el.x86.linux.bin and drag and drop it to the Desktop.

Getting F2 to open Firefox:

You will need to make this change in two places, the el folder and the .elc folder. Find the el.ini file in each, and look for several lines that start with browser = ____. Find the line that says #browser = "" and delete the #. Go down to the 4 lines with browser = and add a line in that has #browser = firefox and save the file. Make sure to do this to both el.ini files.

After following these steps, Agrilles now has no problem playing EL on our Linux laptop with all sounds and music running fine.

Temporary relocate quickbar fix.

Windows 2000 SP4

Nvidia GeForce 6600 LE / PCI-Express x16 / ForceWare Version 94.24

Game Video Settings: 1024x768x16

error_log.txt clean

Had issue where quickbar wouldnt go back to original spot, after moving it.

Farthest I could get it to go is half over the magic quicklinks.

Simple temp fix: Options/HUD, un-tick Relocate Quickbar.

Quickbar returns to "home" position.

Re-tick as needed.

Did same thing (and fixed the same) in full screen and windowed mode.

Farthest I could get it to go is half over the magic quicklinks...

The other option is to press CTRL+SHIFT+(left click). I'll check why you can't drag it all the way back.

Changing the name size and the notepad size was fine, but when I tried to change the chat text size by placing my cursor over it and using backspace on my keyboard, EL crashed twice.

Oh dear, this is a nasty client bug, but it should be easily to fix for the next release. Thanks for spotting it.

Well, I guess we can still offer a patch for this release, so let me know if you can fix it soon.

OK, I'll look at it ASAP.

Also, is the map cluster bug finally fixed?

Grum's proper fix for my problem removes the need for the trap we added to the release code. However, with the trap I was not getting any random crashes, only the resize window crash and the occasional long play crash on exit. Therefore, I can't say if Grum's proper fix will help with the new crashes we're seeing people have. I presume the no-clusters patch you have released is built without CLUSTER_INSIDES defined.

This is a workaround for sound crashes in Windows XP. I don't know if it will work for other flavours of Windows, since I don't have any others to test, but it might be worth a try.

I don't proclaim that this will fix everyone's problem, but in my experience it has resolved most sound issues/crashes with directx sound in many different games, particularly for people using on-board sound instead of a sound card. We tried this with Moebird and she is now killing boars just to hear them squeal like a stuck pig.

  1. Close EL - you shouldn't do this while EL is running.
  2. Select Start / Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices.
  3. Click on the Advanced button which is near the bottom of the window in the Speaker settings section.
  4. Click on the Performance tab.
  5. The top sliding control is labelled Hardware acceleration. When you drag the slider, the text underneath it changes. Drag it to the second position, which changes the text to "Basic acceleration:..."
  6. Click on OK to save your changes.
  7. Click on OK again in the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties window.

That's it. Now you can start up EL and enable the sounds. I just hope there are enough boars to go around.

El can simply not start , block while loading , also it can be unable to

login . It might shut down after logging , alter your display and window size .

Or , you can end up being able to login successfully but having the game

freeze or crash in certain areas or doing specific actions.

These are troubles I encountered . Most of them are solved to a satisfactory extent .

If your game can not load or start, that can mean the installation is

corrupt. You have to delete Your EL 1.50 installation folder and the

C:\Documents and Settings\"user name"\My Documents\Eternal Lands.

Before installing the game make sure you have all your hardware

working properly and all drivers installed and updated . Best to use

your provider's original software Online or if u have a CD for it .

Have the latest DirectX version , DX 9.0 works fine for me. Run all DirectX tets .

Be sure to have enough drive space available for your system to work properly and virtual memory as well .

Choose a mirror then save the kit to disk, install the game ( make sure to set the installation path of EL in case you change

the default location; look under EL.INI for #data_dir and write / paste the full correct path where the game is installed )

Do not alter any EL files , simply click and run EL , try to log in and just

play EL without changing any settings as long as it works .

If you know you have a slower PC , then set your system to adjust for

best performance , do not use software or hardware acceleration options.

Before even opening EL you might consider using the " Program Compatibility Wizard " Under Start - Programs - Accesories .

My first problem was the fact I had instaled two drivers for Graphic Adapters , you have to make sure you have only one

Graphic Adapter installed . Windows did find two Display Adapters in my case and I had to uninstall all video drivers , reboot ,

install the driver for my ATI Radeon Card, disable the other Display Adapter(windows still prompted me to install it's drivers;cancel)

Passable for Edit ^ .

Was there ever a fix to the relocate quickbar issue? I currently can only move it partway over the spellbar but no further. I tried unticking the HUD option with no results.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I had forgotten about this. It's fixed now; you can drag the quickbar all the way to any edge of the screen, in both orientations.
