This is the static client compiled by Xaphier, so please give it a try rven if you can compile your CVS. We want to see if it works on most of the systems, to incldue it in the update.

I'm not sure that's important, but I've got warnings :

pm@localhost ~/new_el/el_install $ ./el.x86.linux.bin
I/O warning : failed to load external entity "mines.xml"
I/O warning : failed to load external entity "sound/sound_config.xml"
B: 1.5
B: 1.5
I/O warning : failed to load external entity "extentions.xml"

I use gentoo on an Athlon64 Dual Core 4200+ with a Radeon X1800.

I guess if there's a warning, then there's a problem somewhere ...

later, I got a segfault.

I'm trying to core dump ...

Ok, I've reproduced under vallgrind :

As you can guess reading the last lines, it when I tried to put 22 Emeralds in the storage that it crashed.

Fine for me.

On test server, storage works for me, #sto command too, killed some stuff, casted some spells, made 5 FE's, harvested cotton and make some thread, used an orc summoning stone, all fine.

But:

Ate fruits -> eating sound.

Ate toadstools -> *NO* eating sound.

I get an 'Illegal Instruction' error running the static binary.

Loading the data works fine; the client crashes when it tries to connect to the server.

I'm running Debian Etch. I tried both the 2.6.18-4-486 and 2.6.18-5-686 kernel.

The client I built from the tagged CVS repository worked just fine for me, so I assume it's not a problem related to ~./elc files.

[edit]

Don't know if that helps :S

After realizing that the test server el.ini is in ~/.elc/test/ (Thanks to Thundercloud) client worked fine (as far as I can tell by idling at beam :))

I do get

I/O warning : failed to load external entity "sound/sound_config.xml"
I/O warning : failed to load external entity "extentions.xml"

(I didn't download the sounds)

I get a lot of "Unknown sounds" warnings in the error log, makes me wonder if it would be possible to get a client without those warnings for those that aren't going to use sounds (i.e. compiled without sound support) for slow systems (or in my case: slow system at work :)).

Is there anything we should test in particular?

The new client atm is not compatible with the storage of the main server, and you will segfault if you try to acces storage, that is already known/posted and is not a bug; if you log on test server, storage will work fine.

About testing the client:

- after installing the sounds file I don't get the I/O warning : failed to load external entity "sound/sound_config.xml" message anymore

- I still get the I/O warning : failed to load external entity "extentions.xml" message: extentions.xml is in Berlios, but is not included in the data files

I'm quite sure an error like that is due to having the wrong data dir set: after loading the game check in ctrl+o -> Misc tab if the path is correct

you're right, it was set to the 1.4.0 client's directory -- after I adjusted it (I've put the 1.5.0 in a subdir at ~/ ), it quits with 'Illegal instruction' error at the moment I try to enable the sound :)

Downloaded both the binary and the data files and also got the sound file from the other thread.

After realizing that there was another el.ini in the ~home/me/.elc/test/ folder that needed the data dir setting, everything works great :)

The data from here: http://el.beplacid.net/downloads/el_data.zip

This is the static client compiled by Xaphier, so please give it a try rven if you can compile your CVS. We want to see if it works on most of the systems, to incldue it in the update.

If there are problems, pelase post here, with details about your distro, and whatever else is relevant.

The client has also been mirrored on my server at:

SuSe 10.2

kernel 2.6.18.8-0.7-default

Using "./el.x86.linux.bin test" when I enable sound I get:

ALSA lib conf.c:3830:(parse_args) Unknown parameter 1

ALSA lib conf.c:3952:(snd_config_expand) Parse arguments error: No such file or directory

ALSA lib pcm.c:2143:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default:0,0

compiling from cvs (1.5.0 tag) I don't get the above, however I get the following every few seconds instead:

native_blitbuffer: select error occured

I can also verify that the "extensions.xml" was not in the data file, but the error vanishes by copying the file from cvs.

I'm updating various libs and alsa components that have newer versions right now, and I'll try again after they complete.

UPDATE: after updating libs, the cvs compile runs without error, the test client still has the above error.

Ok, but does it otherwise work?

Yes, sorry. I teleported, used rings, killed animals, monters, changed several maps, fleed combat, interacted with a few NPCs, adjusted many of the settings in options, all without any problems whatsoever.

Works fine on Debian etch and Ubuntu 7.10. Though I had to install libpng3 to stop getting errors such as:

"[23:13:30] ERROR: Cannot load texture './textures/eye_candy/16x16/simple.png'." on the Ubuntu machine.

I guess I need to try on a clean install to work out which extra libraries are required. Tomorrow, I'll try from a live CD on my daughters machine with intel graphics (so it works 3d accelerated out of the box). Should be able to try Ubuntu 7.10 and Fedora 8 at least.

As i'm exclusively running Linux now i couldn't test the Win32 RCs/pre-release, and since im still too newb in Linux i couldn't compile CVS... but this i can help test, i just hope what i'm about to report isn't already known issues that've been posted in other threads.

My system:

Athlon64 3400+

nForce3 chipset

GeForce 6800 AGP

1.5GB RAM

Ubuntu 7.04 running recent proprietary nvidia driver.

Ok, firstly, the eye candy on the great swords still displays in the old sword location (where the sword would be if held by the old models)

Image

Secondly, I randomly get roof textures/models being rendered in mid air, in odd places. They dont stay there, they flicker on and off as i move the camera around:

Piece of roof rendered in mid air (near the wolf), casting a shadow too

Portland looking fine

Then i move the camera a tiny bit and suddenly i have a roof (/mountain?) texture... also note that shadows stopped working? when the roof texture was there

Same thing in VotD; everything looks fine...

...then i move the camera a little and boom, roof texture.

If i move the camera a little bit again it goes away.

I only got this during daytime. I could not replicate it at night. I also couldn't replicate it with shadows disabled, but i only had a very small amount of time to test that before the test server went to night time.

I only got this sudden roof texture thing when i was in map that had houses, usually when i approached the town area, and it seems that the longer i stayed in the map and the more i moved around town and rendered the houses from different angles, the less random roofs would appear.

Hope this helps :)

EDIT: oh btw; only sounds related errors (cause i didnt get the sound)... certainly no errors popping up in the console whenever a roof texture magically appeared.

EDIT2: and i tested some fighting, using storage, bags... all worked fine :devlish:

EDIT3: TC just pointed out to me his post HERE with similar probs... so sorry for the repeat bug report... but the problem still remains.

Well I've tried both. The fedora 8 live CD worked flawlessly. Sound, graphics, eye-candy every thing was fine. No extra packages needed. The Ubuntu 7.10 live CD was almost as good. I had to turn off desktop extra effects to stop a weird flickering. Like with the actual installed version of Ubuntu, I also had to install the libpng3 package from the universe repository to make the eye-candy work. Each time, I tested for several minutes, walking about, fighting, casting spells, changing locations, using storage etc. The test machine was a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop with Intel graphics and processor. Amazing what you can do on a live CD these days. :P
