Dwarf Muskets

i know ranged weps may be comein p2p but every one always talks of bows .. bows the elfs this n bows the elfs that ..personal when i say elf i say it with my wrist bent ..if ya know what i mean ..be pissed if i gota be a elf to be a good mage ....neways my idea is

 

Dwarf Muskets and other low tech fire arms

was thinkin it could kinda work like magic does in a way ..

well you would have a gun ...then you would need the "essances" the essance would be like "shot" and "black powder"

was thinkin could have all diffrent kinds of shot like iron to titanium

and the black powder ..well we have sulpher and coal alredy in the game ...just need some saltpeter

 

neways just an idea :roll:

Back to the topic...muskets seem like a good idea. However, personally, I think they're in the wrong time period. Firearms belong to the industrial age, which doesn't make for an ideal fantasy world.

 

If the muskets are implemented, care must be taken to keep the game balanced. The high damage would need to be offset with poor accuracy.

Only allow dwarf muskets if a mage can caste a firespell that sets off all the powder you are carrying!

 

Besides, we don't have something to use for a source or nitrates in the game yet, so we are missing an key ingrediant! But then again, you might be able to harvest at the privies!

I don't like the muskets but how about a  :!: BOLT RIFLE :!:  

it could shoot bolts like how a crossbow does  8)

Then you might as well put in Cruise Missles, nukes, land mines, grenades, claymores, etc.

 

The problem with allowing even one item that uses something close to gunpowder is that you are deviating a lot from the basis of this game. I do admit that a simple satchel type charge that explodes (or a molitove cocktail) would at least allow non-magic users a simple ranged weapon with an area of effect, but where do you stop?

Thats why I said you'd have to have people havest the privies :wink:

 

When the secret of gunpowder reached Europe, those were one of the places that were used as sources for the nitrates needed from the saltpeter (along with bat droppings and others).

Taking the grenades idea :D How about make a grenade that will only works for summon (more like the smite summon) so the non-magicians can kill summons also :twisted: But not sure what's needed to make 1 (manu n magic) or just make it so ppl can only buy em from NPC.

well...if its medieval fantasy, wheres the long bows the beserker axes and the fire arrows.....wait....thats an awsome idea....FIRE ARROWS :D just use a fire esence with an arrow and bam...kinda like a bolt rifle but better :P

I like the idea. We are only talking about the most basic guns.

 

Or hey, since this is medieval, how about a catapult? Then we can attack CO's fort in those events while being on the other side of the map!

The Cannons made debute in europe much earlier than you think. It wouldn't surprise me that they, at some point, were used by the crusaders in Israel.

 

And a matter of fact, the "boltrifle" wasn't that farfetched. 1 of the first forms of cannons was a small one that shot away bolts like the crossbow.

 

So I suggest that before bringing in RL-history in discussion like this, do a checkup before making statement (use something called Internet for an instance).

 

It has been hard for simple cannons to make debute in RPG-Fantasy (Only seen them in WoW and Arcanum so far). I personally believe that it's the magickusers that keeps supressing it. Think about it .. by Gods, a non-magick user might actually get a better chance against their supremacy. :shock:

 

I can understand that the cannons and firearms might never enter EL, but at least bows and crossbows. It exists in EL .. I have read the historical Epic stories about the numerous Wars of EL. There is bows in them.

 

But it's all up to Enttropy, Roja and the others good programmers that I hasn't learned the names of yet, up to them if they will take the challenge of writing that extra code needed to make it work properly.

Oh yeah .. then I think of it now in second hand .. I think I saw some dwarven cannons in RS too. And the FF series, well the later ones at least, had some forms of firearms too, but don't know if we can classify them as medieval. that makes now at least 3 medieval RPG-Fantasy games that has introduced some forms of firearms.

 

Actually .. the firearms is spreading more and more into the Fantasy-RPG games. ... Beware

Besides, who gives a damn about real life? this is a fantasy. There are no elves on earth. So who says there is even saltpeter there? But racial weapons could be alright... i dunno. I cant see why a dwarf couldnt use a bow? And id have thought throwing axes would have come up before crossbows for dwarves. Sure the dwarves would be the ones that make em, but they'd suck at using em.

 

Oh and 'Elrond' - get over yourself. Elves arent a race, they are a species. And humans have always been 'speciest' :/ whatever the word is

 

How hard can it be to implement bows anyway? If you wanted to see the arrow it would be. Harder still if you aim and it can be dodged. But if its like harm... should be easy. Btw, are animations ever coming in for magicks?

A big problem in adding in any ranged weapons is that game balance takes a major hit unless a lot of careful work and testing is done to ensure balance is maintained. Most games, ranged weapons (magical and non-magical) over balance the game horribly so that a fighter doesn't have a chance.

Well implement it like magic. Make it suck. Make it do bugger all damage. Slowly improve it till you get it right

I know this is border-line necro, but can we revisit muskets and other gun-powder based weapons? They could have lower accuracy and range than bows or crossbows, but should hit like a mule.

Sure.

Then rifles.

Then cannons and machine guns.

Then mortars.

Then howitzers.

Then missles.

Then nukes.

How about photon/antimatter/black hole ICBMs?

 

This is supposed to be a medieval fantasy game. Even RC mines are too much. Maybe even gunpowder is too much.
