Macintosh OS X client 1.3.0 bugs thread

Recommended Posts

This is the "official" OS X bugs thread for the 1.3.0 client release. I will update this first message as problems are identified and fixed. The client is linked to from the EL download page, or go to the official el_osx site to download. A MUG (Macintosh User Group) list is here.

If you think you have found a bug, please try to determine if it is OS X specific before posting. General bugs should be posted elsewhere.

Mac version .01a (10.4 Universal Binary)

Also runs on some 10.3.9 systems. Some G4 and G5 have been confirmed to work.

Note:

The location of configuration files has changed (which you should know if you read the ReadMe or my webpage). For previous users, you may want to copy over all the *.dat and *.txt files from the old configuration directory ~/.elc

Known issues (other than those listed in the ReadMe):

Music is just static for PowerPC...made fix to CVS. Next Mac version will have it working.

Shadow problem on PowerPC. Leave disabled.

After enabling poor_man, game will not restart on PowerPC. Delete you el.ini file to fix. (real fix in next version)

Breaking rules screen problem on PowerPC. (Fixed for next version. thx to Cordelia for spotting)

Only font 1 works. (fixed next version)

ctrl+space (autocompletion of names and commands) does not work completely. Works "more" in next version.

Teleport nexus seems to freeze game occasionally on PowerPC. I think this has to do with teleporting into walls. Quit game and restart.

This was primarily built on a i386 MacBook Pro.

I have done my best to test this on a G5 iMac, but there still may be problems.

I have not yet made a OS 10.3.x version yet due to some technical difficulties. However, as noted above, this seems to work on 10.3.9 systems too. YMMV.

Finally, stay on topic. This thread is for identifying bugs in the OS X client.

Wheee....

I want my EL!!!! I'm going absolutely insane waiting for it.

Sux to be on a delayed client.

Btw, I dunno if anyone posted any of these, but these were some mac bugs i found in the previous client:

(1) if a mod WARNS you with a "15 second" rules window, it comes up on the mac client as 15000 seconds (eg. 4-6 hours)

(2) if you logoff in the fast reading area, you can't log back in. client will crash.

But these were OLD client bugs... so, who knows what will happen with the new client.

-Delia

PS> refreshing this thread every 5 minutes till I get my client. ^.^

Fix for (1) is not to do anything to upset the ebul mods. Not sure about (2).

Actually, restarting client reset the timer to the correct amount of time. Fix for 2 was to have a wind0ze friend login as me and beam me away from the library. my spells were all messed up after and had to redo them.

the "Heal" spell is still spelled messy, but I never cast it anymore.

Oh, and I'm on 10.3 at home, but I can go to another place to use a 10.4 computer for tonight ^.^

Hey 0ctane! I'm running 1.3.0 on 10.3.9 and the only thing that doesn't seem to work is the text command #cls. When I enter #cls my cursor runs the busy pinwheel for a few seconds and the client shuts down, asking if I want to send the details of the unexpected termination to Apple.

Let me know if 1) this is something you even want to fix and 2) if there's anything I can do to provide you with more information to make this easier to fix.

Thanks!

#cls bug isn't limited to OSX, it's is a known client bug affecting all platforms.

It works... and then it doesn't.

After a period of time in which it worked, and i could run two clients simultaneously, now I can't run any client at all anymore.

Well, I deleted my entire ~/Library/Application Support/ folder, and now it works.

I have no idea what I changed in it.

Cordelia,

Please clean your post by deleting the contents of the crash log up to:

0 libGL.dylib 0x9266ca14 glDeleteTextures + 0x30

As stated on my website, "If game does not start, you might have screwed the el.ini file due to above. Try deleting it and restarting." Well, I guess I did not say anything about a crash...

You probably changed a setting (shadows, shadow map, ...) that uses an improper OpenGL call. Anyhow, since you deleted that whole folder, you deleted the el.ini file too (and magically everything works again). I will look at the code to fix this problem.

If ANYONE gets a similar error, try deleting the el.ini file. A new one is automatically generated when you restart the game.

Huh? that's the start of the crash log.

Do you want me to delete everything after that?

There's nothing before it to delete.

The first bug I reported at the top of this thread still exists. If a mod sends me the 15 second "RULES" window, then I see 15,300+ seconds instead of 15 seconds. This bug is fixed, and goes back to default 15 seconds if I restart the client.

Please clean your post by deleting the contents of the crash log up to:

0 libGL.dylib 0x9266ca14 glDeleteTextures + 0x30

Ok, I think I did that. It was only like 5-10 lines though, compared to like 200 for the rest of the log, so it doesn't seem like "cleaning" to me. lol.

This release seems to for some reason improve graphical performance on this "old" Titanium Powerbook G4, 550mhz. The sound works great, as well as other things that didn't seem to work so well before.

Unfortunately the application will not run unless I delete the el.ini file before each launch, which means I cannot adjust the options at all. This is prohibitive enough to keep me from playing at this point, as I must adjust all my settings with each run of the game. Things like turning on poor man mode are absolutley necessary on my older system.

As far as I can tell, it makes no difference if I simply change one tiny setting, such as turning FPS display on or off, or change something with the graphics (like turning everything off but poor man mode). Any el.ini file present at launch causes a crash on launch until it is deleted.

I found a 800MHz G4 desktop system to only be playable when EL was the only program running. Anyhow....

Your el.ini problem is a little strange. If you have no el.ini file when you start the game, one will be generated for you. Without changing any settings, can you restart the game?

"poor man" is a known problem, but honestly, since it does not affect me, I have not paid much attention to it. Limited availability of a PowerPC Mac hinders my ability to test out everything. Also, real life has been keeping me really busy lately. However, since this is a playability issue, I will put it higher (if not at the top) of my list of things to do.

Your hardware is fine, This is a software problem. Specifically, your OS 10.3.9 libSystem does not want to play nice with a simple system call (likely due to the game being compiled on 10.4). It was a fluke (in my opinion) that the game worked with other 10.3.9 systems to begin with. As mentioned above, your milage may vary. There is only one 10.3.9 system left at my place of work, and with work actually being work, I have not had time to complete a 10.3.9 build of the game.

Options:

  1. upgrade to 10.4 (usually pretty cheap if you are a college student)
  2. Learn Xcode and build the game on your computer
  3. Buy me a mini Mac so that I have a PowerPC at home to compile the game.
  4. Be patient until I can track down problems with the 10.3.9 build
