The Dandy Manifest.

Recommended Posts

"A Dandy Master is a bit of a Jedi Master, with Sex-Appeal instead of the Force."

That's usually what I say about Dandyness, when people ask me. But what is really Dandyness about ? Well, it's the Art of Pleasing, without being obvious or pushy. Or if you are obvious, make it so nicely, so people are amused, not annoyed.

To be a decent Dandy, you have to follow some guidelines. Those are no rules, but merely recommendations...

  • #1 Be nice to people in a general way.
  • #2 Be especially nice to people of the gender you're attracted to.
  • #3 Have no prejudice toward sexual orientation other than yours.
  • #4 Have no prejudice at all, it's even better.
  • #5 Be polite. Use curses in a creative or fashionable way, and don't direct those to people, even those who were bad to you.
  • #6 Never harass someone you find to your liking. Never. If they say stop, you stop at once.

Of course, all of these aren't mandatory (apart from #5 and #6, of course). It will all depend on how you feel about Dandyness.

There are a few tricks a Dandy Master can use to befriend a target person. It requires good feeling to choose which to use, for one person is not another. A blunt praise will please that one lady when it will offend irreversibly that other one. You must act carefully, unless you're one of those geniuses whose wild guesses always strike right...

Some examples :

- Praise a woman's beauty. That one's always been a winner. Don't overdo it, be genuinely admirative. For a man, praise his strength if he's a fighter, his skills if he's a manual worker, his mind if he's a scholar. Of course, some people will not be fooled by a praise, but the aim is not to fool people, it's to befriend them.

- Variant of the former : do the praise as if dreaming aloud, then be embarrassed because you spoke it aloud. Pretend it was due for private conversation and did not intend to be disrespectful. If you can blush, do blush.

- Offer help when the person is in obvious need. It's even better when it happens in a crowd of uncaring people.

- Once you've managed to make contact, listen to the person. Listen openly, open-mindedly. That one is important. If you can't listen to people, people can't possibly like you unless you're a born charismatic leader.

- Presents. Do make presents, you greedy mongrels ! That one trick is certainly the most efficient one. But you must be careful. Some people will be genuinely pleased by the gesture. Others will just take advantage of it. So use your mind and watch out for subtle clues such as changes of behaviour towards other people, rumours and facts. But presents, definitely, will win you the heart of a person you know you can trust. Pay care to the nature of the gift. Make a gift appropriately, do not offer flowers to a fighter, or a weapon to a crafter. As an example, I love to offer rare books. It's a nice present, since those items are not easy to come by, and they are neutral (in the sense that everyone will need rare books sooner or later) and are in phase with my personality (scholar, dandy, etc.)...

And many others, of course...

Politics and Dandyness.

Player Killing :

A Dandy shan't indulge in PvP fights for loot or for the sake of PvP. The exceptions are :

  • To defend a Loved One;
  • To train with a Loved One;
  • To train with a friend...

Under no other circumstances the Dandy is to fight against other players. Leave the "Battle Honours" to fighters or bandits.

The Dandy may get acquainted to PKers, and even may be friendly to them. The Dandy shall never complain about getting killed on PK areas. Leave the pettiness to those who can't stand the fact that there's always stronger. The Dandy shall keep civil to the bandit that just offed him, and never shall they harass the PKers for any reason. The Dandy is a responsible and sensible person who will not act as a crybaby because "<insert your usual PKer name here> killed them though they told them they were their friend". Going on PK areas means taking a risk, the Dandy is aware of that risk.

Scamming and bagjumping :

The Dandy is no scammer, nor bagjumper. The Dandy shall not befriend scammers and bagjumpers, those are people enjoying making others miserable. That is the antithesis of Dandyness, so none of those pitiful people among a Dandy's friends. With the constant rule of civility : no need to be rude to a scammer if you don't wish to talk to him.

Dandyness and manual activities :

The Dandy shall consider all skills of equivalent nobility. There's no dumb task, only dumb thoughts about those tasks. Be it Summoning, Crafting, Harvesting, the Dandy can practise any of those without pouting (pouting is so unsexy). The Dandy is not afraid of being a scavenger (as long as they wash their hands afterwards). Be careful , there's a huge difference between scavenging and bagjumping. Scavenging means gathering bags left behind by fighters who don't give a damn about animal items, taking other forsaken bags here and there, in order to keep the map clean and to get useful materials (who said bones weren't useful ?). Scavenging is a fair activity, since it goes against the "bagspamming" activity (eww, ugly activity, very unsexy too).

Deathbags :

The Dandy is amiable towards people that die nearby. He'll keep and refresh deathbags of those as much as possible, and return the items whenever he can.

One exception, though : if the late character is a scammer, a bagjumper or a bagspammer, the Dandy may not feel obliged to save the items. But they preferably won't loot such deathbags (you don't know what kind of microbs those people transport).

Dandyness and hardcore training :

The Master Dandy always enjoy a good conversation more than a profitable training session. Dandyness is more about roleplaying than power-building. Yet nothing forbid the Dandy to become strong or skilled; it must not be their primary goal. In regard with the training on combat skills, the Dandy is not a Fighter. He will train in order to be able to go on most areas without being bothered by most aggressive creatures if he does not wish to get the Monster Magnetism perk (or a cloak, green is good looking colour). About creatures spawning points, a Dandy will be humble, and will not perform what is called "spawn camping" or "farming" in some games. If a wannabe fighter comes along, the Dandy will share the spawn as fairly as can be, or even relinquish his training, there are better things to do, like befriend said wannabe fighter (it's always better to be on friendly terms with a fighter, trust me).

Dandyness and seduction :

Now this is a delicate topic. While Dandyness is all about being sexy and easy-going, the Dandy must pay great care in not breaking anybody's heart (unless, of course, they are scammers, bagjumpers and bagspammers). The Dandy is in no way a breaker of marriages, s/he will never attempt to seduce a person who already has a dear one. The Dandy may be friend with one or both parts of a couple, but he shall never interfere with their feelings for one another. If the Dandy does so, s/he falls on the Dark Side of Dandyness, and never again shall the Dark Dandy deserve the trust of others...

The Dandy does not lie to friends. They're honest and tell their feelings right on whenever they doubt their friends' understanding. They won't play with another's heart, such is the deed of a Dark Dandy.

Dandyness and brokenheartedness :

Nothing is eternal, but Death itself, and Change. Even real love may end. Though it is never a joyful event, the Dandy shall take dismissal from their beloved in the most graceful way. Never will they harass their former love, be they in their rights or not, be they the dismisser or the dismissed. If things are truly painful to bear, the Dandy will just take distance from their former beloved. A strong Dandy Master will dive more fully into life, and drown his sorrow in a crowd, meeting people, again and again, cultivating his friendships as ever, so he can endure the kaleidoscope of his feelings with detachement, grace and style. Let the irony cover the cynicism, let time dampen the irony, until you can face your former love with a smile for your shared memories, with no bitterness...

Well, for example, I've been considering calling Legalus a "Silly Son of a Magnet Pokemon". That's why I mean by creative  ...

But as it was directed to someone, I just did not do it.
