What exactly is the problem with the current system?

It's boring like hell.

And do you think this will make it less boring?

IMHO it'll just make it more anoying. I mean, what's the fun in looking for ore, harvesting, ah crap it's empty, looking for more ore?

What is the fun in hunting creatues, kill them, take what they drop and look for the next creature to fight?

 

Fighting and harvesting are then not different anymore, its nearly the same.

 

And as the creatures will bite you, mother nature will make shure that you wont go off without some really painful injuries.

I think it could make it much more fun. Maybe you just aren't explorer?

I agree, if there is no challenge in a game it's boring. I think a lot of criticizers of ore spawns just fear that harvesting would get back a basic flaw that is ubiquitous in EL: repetition. Because EL does not include any task or enough challenges to spend a good part of your time on them it is common to choose "achieving" as a task. And because gaining wealth, experience, or whatever is done easiest by repeating actions that provide best results, for many players EL involves a lot of repetition. And repetition causes boredom, so you try do do something else but to do new things you need money and experience ... got the point? When I started playing this game, very soon the only interesting thing remaining was meeting new people and participating in game events.

 

If anyone has an idea how to get rid of a little repetition easily, I am sure that everyone will welcome him (or her). I am sorry, I only have an idea of a complex solution: continuous medium-term changes. For instance, one day a vein will run out, and it will run out forever, so you will have to drive new tunnels. And when a cavern wall collapses, falling stones will overwhelm existing veins and tunnels. Houses will burn down and new houses will be built. Monsters will conquer new habitats and players will recapture others from them. Desasters will change appearance of Seridia significantly. And more of these things.

 

I know that actually implementing parts of this would have a lot of issues. However, if you are interested I am going to tell you my ideas how to spot quite some of them in an easy and straight manner in a new thread in the appropriate forum. Sorry for the long post, thank you for your attention.

Personally I don't find the sitting and harvesting boring at all.

 

In fact I have made most of my EL friends at various harvesting spots. It allows us to relax, take a break from things that do demand more of our mouse-using capabilities and chat amongst each other. At the same time something productive is being done.

 

I urge those of you who have spoken for random ore spots to consider this (IMHO) important socializing feature of the game to reconsider this idea.

Well I considered this, but I think helping each other finding veins will be quite as socialising :)

We might even open up an official harvesters' channel, what about that? :) However, we will badly need a multiple channel feature :huh:

:P I'd hafta agree with Lach on all points there. Although, if the devs don't give names to the areas in the cave, the players will. Which might be the better way of picking names. Even now, there's the north iron spot, and the south iron spot, in crystal caves. I've seen several players refer to these locations seperately like that, and it evolved from the players themselves. (It's really neat in that "watching Discovery Channel" kinda way)

 

:P I usually socialize at a veggie garden, or in a channel. Of course, the boundaries for the veggie gardens won't change, so that would be no different. And a 20 tile range for a particular ore is not going to be searching the entire cave silently looking for a single iron deposit, so you can still talk to others there. There's just gonna have to be fewer people there.

Most players are not good typers. Can you imagine them trying to type and chase ore spawns at the same time?

 

Don't believe me? How much talking do fighters do when chasing creatures? Not much and I see the same thing potentially happening here.

 

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of the game evolving, but not sure about this idea.

A better idea would be the spawns changing every X minutes/days. You'd still have to explore/ask but there wouldn't be any competition.

;) Solution for what? ..It's not more fun, It doesnt help the economy because it does not limit the resources and therefore it cannot replace all the delays

It's a solution for the wars between harvesters.

I also don't want moving spawns but I prefer spawns changing per X mins/days then spawns going poof after X harvests. And the spawns changing after x harvests also doesn't help the economy because it also doesn't limit the recources.

With all due respect Shasso... why do you care about harvesting? I mean, it's not like you harvest at all.

 

This would be like me suggesting how to fight fluffies.

After update, I have fun exploring tarsengaard, I have great fun exploring magic school but hunting gargs in tg cave isnt fun that way. I even dont see where is exploring in this example - maybe you mean clicking all the time to be faster than other and kill some monster ? Ore spawn wont make harvesting more fun, even not less boring just more annoying. During harvesting I would rather chat with somebody or write some reply on forum than 'have more fun harvesting'.

Please read the whole thread before you post. As we already told, competition is intentional. We also already told that competition will for sure lead to division of labor, so that it will be reduced to a minimum quickly. And in addition: note that the people that were answering were harvesting iron ore. Do you really think that people will run into caves harvesting everything they see? Please be sensible.

Some people were complaining that it would destroy the peacefull harvester comunity, I was responding to them. I also misread the part about the iron, sorry. (But why would they know the position of the silver?)
