Yes, i know that no matter how many times i press the button the elevator won't go any faster. God save me if there's a noise associated with the pressing of the button. If that doesn't have an effect, try pulling up the covering around it to see what it's linked to. After that, drop a feather on it. Then throw a ball at it from far off. Poke it with a rod. Run an electric current through it. Bring a magnet close to it. Try sniffing, tasting, and listening to it, to see if you can find out anything.
