The Radeon X1600 has been moved to ATI's legacy driver support structure. So you'll need Catalyst 9.3 or earlier. 9.4 does not support your card (see all the ", not using it..." messages when initializing the GL_* Extensions).

Works pretty fine on my Debian Testing/Squeeze box with ATI Radeon HD 3200 onboard graphics (using fglrx 9.6). 1024x768, no AA, no AF: ~80 fps 1024x768, x4 AA, x16 AF: ~55 fps

What graphics card/chip is in your laptop and which driver are you using?

This is related to the intel graphics driver used in Ubuntu 9.04. You could a try an older version, 8.10 maybe? I *think* the technical reason is that summoning uses the manufacturing window...and you can't manufacture while engaged in combat ;P But yes, it would be nice if we could summon in combat Removing the high level summoning stones from the NPCs is a nice idea too (or at least increase the price they're selling them at)
