This week I am taking home a beautiful new kitty! She is about 7 months old and here is her picture: You can't really tell there, but she has the coolest bright orange eyes! Anyway, I am not so good at naming things (just look at MY name ), and Albazz wants to name her Optimus Prime... so I'm asking for the EL community's help on this one. Maybe you've read the resent posts about problems people have been having with updating their graphics cards. I too had this problem, because nvidia would rather sell more NEW cards than provide support for their existing customers current cards. This is my story. Radu made a new client for us to test, and being the curious EL addict I am, I had to try it. Low and behold, it crashed as soon as I logged in. Why? I needed to update my graphics driver. I went to the nvidia homepage to do just that, and discovered (eventually) that I had to get the driver from my laptop manufacturer (HP). This is because laptop graphics cards have to be specially made to deal with power management and other issues. When I went to the HP website, I found that the latest driver update for my graphics card (GeForce GO 7600) was dated 2006-05-15. When I tried using this "new" driver, I had the same trouble with the new EL test client. My next step was to contact HP, through the use of their live-chat system. The agent who helped me was very nice, but the gist of what he said was, I have no idea... nvidia provides HP with drivers, HP modifies them for its laptops and then publishes the drivers to its customers. He could not explain why there has been no update for my card in almost two years. So, I thought that perhaps nvidia hadn't provided a driver for HP to modify! I went back to the nvidia home page and found a place to "ask them a question." They responded quite quickly, which rather surprised me considering Radu has been unable to get a response from them and he is a developer! By this point, thanks to Gen_Axis I had found a way to make the latest nvidia driver work on my laptop! wheeee! However, knowing what I now knew, and given nvidia's response above, I realized I couldnt let the issue drop. So I called them on their bullshit! Uhoh! Someone just had a minor heart attack! How do I know? This is what they sent me Almost right away I got another song and dance, now from the "Level 2 Tech Support group"!! Ahh... back to the beginning But I can't let them get away with this! Someone is Just Trying to Make Money off of my ignorance and my trust that all things computer become quickly obsolete. My latest email to nvidia: And we will see what happens next in the saga... Why am I posting all this? Well, first off to provide you all with some twisted entertainment Secondly, to vent my frustration, and give you all a place to vent yours! And lastly, to get advice on wording and technical information (which honestly, I don't understand) that would make my questions even more Un-ignorable. Eventually I will have to go back to HP with all of this, and I want as much correct evidence as possible to expose their ultimate bullshit! Power to the consumer!

The geologist and concerned person in me just can't not comment on the radon thing! I know this is a silly thread, but take notice anyway! If you live in a house with a basement (or a main floor ) in, or on top of bedrock like granite, or anything you think looks like granite, you should be getting your basement tested for radon. If you have a problem with radon, it is easily fixed with better air circulation!

I used to play the pk server. Mostly I stopped cuz there weren't enough fun people to play with. But the number of extremely immature people talking, not trash but total crap, to me certainly didn't help. I have a tendency to take such things personally, so I decided I wasn't really cut out for the pk server. Its a shame, because I do really like the added element of risk and excitement over there, in fact I like everything about it BUT the extreme immaturity of the most vocal players. I think that a lot of experienced main server players would really like it too, but be turned off for the same reason I was. The immature trash talkers (as opposed to the mature trash talkers ) are killing the PK server all by themselves by being the biggest possible idiots they can. And why... just cuz... they can. Sure, I could have #ignored all those people, but I can't ignore the entire atmosphere of the pk server, which has been infected with this kind of extreme immaturity. Good luck to everyone still playing there!

Next Episode... NVIDIA's reponse is to pass the buck! Coming soon, will I be able to get HP to explain why they haven't updated the driver? Will I even be able to contact them?? Stay tuned...

My System: HP Pavilion dv8000 (EX177AV) Intel centino duo - T2600 (?) Microsoft Windows XP Professional NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 My Solution: Installed the driver found here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index....showtopic=17608 With the instructions found here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=9243 1) download the driver and the Modded INF 2) run the driver file to extract the files 3) copy and paste the modded INF file into the folder with the extracted files, saying YES to any replace this file messages 4) find and run the setup.exe file in the same folder 5) I got a message about SLi issues and just clicked ok with no consequences. And thats it! A very easy solution that will give my laptop many more years of happy life I have contacted both HP and nvidia with courteous but insistent emails asking for explanations as to why they do not release the drivers for the GO systems when there is clearly no technical or hardware issues preventing it. I strongly encourage everyone with a GO card to do the same. I contacted nvidia by clicking the "Ask a Question" tab here: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia....ser/std_alp.php and going through their process. Be courteous but ask when nvidia intends to update the drivers for the GeForce GO cards to support OpenGL version 2.1.2, etc, as the regular GeForce series now does, and give evidence from the laptopvideo2go.com site that there is no technical reason why the new drivers can't work with the GO series cards. Ask for an explanation. But don't swear at them! Phrase your message in a way that will get a response. Only by getting them to read these messages and respond to us can we have a hope of encouraging them to change their policy. Good luck, everyone!

On the topic of "normal sibling teasing" I would venture a guess that those who thought this level of teasing was "normal" are older siblings themselves I have an older brother who teased me mercilessly (still does but we dont talk much anymore) to the point where I probably yelled at him at the same volume, if not using the same vocabulary. It really hurts when the person you look up to most in the world doesnt understand you, or what's important to you, or when they humiliate you just for the fun of it. edit: spelling

Try a different (bit older) driver version? I didnt have any strange flashes, so far everything is stable on my machine. I was so sure I'd restart to finish the install only to have my screen be completely blank or totally messed up in some other way!

In response to my question to nvidia about updating drivers for the GeForce Go 7600 chip/card I received the following: This is of course bullshit, as I now have no problems whatsoever using the latest nvidia driver with Gen_Axis' modification method. But what are ya gonna do? These people dont care about our problems. The just want to sell more cards I recommend anyone with the same card or any of the GeForce Go series to follow the directions in Gen_Axis' post in the Pre Rc4 thread. edit: added link to thread

I have the same bug. This one using the el_patch.exe: And this one using the el_pre_rc_24_02_07.exe: It only seems to happen with the Acc/magic indicator.

Well, as expected, I've been given the run-around! I contacted HP's live-chat support and chatted with a very helpful pleasant person who unfortunately could tell me nothing, nor help me with anything. I've also tried contacting nvidia, but I'm not holding my breath. I am tempted to try Gen_Axis's h4x, I think I know enough about backing up and rolling back to not screw up my system permanently if it doesn't work... wish me luck! EDIT: It worked!! Same result as Acelon. One note, I can get it to work (not crash) and interact with things by just deleting the anim.vert file, leaving the others where they are. I dont know anything about these files so maybe this is an obvious solution. I'm just a scientist conducting a systematic elimination experiment

Can you give me the link where you got your driver? I can only find the one HP has for my model of laptop, dunno if it makes a difference what brand laptop one has, but I'll try anything. That videocard is only made for HP laptops and I also use the one they provide (nvidia doesn't provide drivers for them). In which case, would you please tell me which driver version you are using and any other information that might help me get to the point you are at, where everything is working? Thanks
